Originally conceived as a 50th anniversary tribute to Disneyland, this 332-minute DVD set celebrates Walt Disney’s vision, determination, and remarkable achievement in creating America’s first theme park.
The collection offers a fascinating look at the planning, construction, opening, and legacy of Disneyland through the documentary “The Secrets, Stories, and Magic of Disneyland,” the retrospective “Operation Disneyland,” three episodes from “The Wonderful World of Color,” one “People and Places” episode, and historical time-lapse footage of the park’s construction in Anaheim, California.
Introduced by Leonard Maltin and Julie Andrews, the 80-minute documentary “The Secrets, Stories, and Magic of Disneyland” explores Walt Disney’s original vision for Disneyland, an idea dismissed by many at the studio as “Walt’s Folly.” The program follows the park from early concept art and site planning through construction challenges, opening day problems, technological innovations, and unrealized ideas for the “Disneyland that never was.”
The set also includes extensive new and vintage interview footage featuring Walt Disney, George Lucas, Roy Disney, Herb Ryman, Jack Lindquist, Richard Sherman, and others. Additional features include an interactive Disneyland trivia game and a restored version of the 1956 “People and Places: Disneyland USA,” which presents Disneyland as a place of enlightenment, happiness, and fun while taking viewers on a leisurely tour of the park’s original themed areas.
